Boerboel Support

Appraisal System

BREED IMPROVEMENT SCHEME.

The BREED IMPROVEMENT SCHEME of BOERBOEL INTERNATIONAL consists of four different actions that culminate into one comprehensive report on the specific Boerboel that takes part in this excellent process.

The BIS process determines the TOTAL PRODUCTION INDEX of the specific Boerboel. The importance of this scheme can not be accentuated enough. Additional measurements are also taken to gather information to determine specific INHERITANCE FACTORS.

A). APPRAISAL SYSTEM (CONFORMATION and MOVEMENT)

  1. GENERAL APPEARANCE (3).
Size, Balance, Musculature, Gender Authenticity, Impressive, Skin + Coat.
  2. HEAD (4).
    Type, Comparisons, Volume, Teeth.
  3. NECK (1).
    Shape, Length, Attachment.
  4. FRONT QUARTER (3).
    Angulations, Comparisons, Positions, Volume.
  5. CENTER PIECE (1).
    Comparisons, Volume.
  6. HIND QUARTER (3).
    Angulations, Comparisons, Positions, Volume.
  7. MOVEMENT (5).
Buoyant, Smooth, Alignment, Top line, Reach.

These seven sections are measured to the Breed Standard on a scale of 3 to 5, where 5 represents the PERFECT / EXCELLENT example, 4,5 VERY GOOD, 4 GOOD, 3,5 POOR and 3 NOT ACCEPTABLE.
The value of each section is indicated in brackets.
The total value of the APPRAISAL SYSTEM (Conformation and Movement), counts out of 100 points , but forms only 50% of the TOTAL PRODUCTION INDEX.(TPI).

B).TEMPERAMENT TEST

The TEMPERAMENT TEST consists of seven individual sections:

  1. SELF CONFIDENT (3).
  2. MANAGEABLE (2).
  3. REACTION TO OTHER DOG (2).
  4. REACTION THRESHHOLD (3).
  5. DEFENSIVE INSTINCT (3).
  6. SUSPICION (3).
  7. FEARLESSNESS (4).

These seven tests are done to establish the Boerboel’s ACCEPTABLE SOCIAL BEHAVIOR on a scale from 1 to 5.
The tests are done while the Boerboel is under control by his handler but no verbal communication is allowed.

The total value of the TEMPERAMENT TEST counts out of 100 points, but forms only 25% of the TOTAL PRODUCTION INDEX (TPI).

C). HEALTH REPORT

The HEALTH REPORT consists of four sections.

  1. TESTICLES and SCROTUM(MALES); HYPERPLASIA(BITCHES). (5).
  2. HIPS (6).
  3. ELBOWS (5).
  4. EYELIDS (4).

These four reports are done as follow;

For breeders/owners living in Holland, Belgium, Germany and anyone else that will take the drive, we have a “Package deal” with the veterinary Kliniek voor Gezelschapsdieren Eersel NL, by Maarten Kappen.

In this package which contains: HD, ED, PennHip X-rays, Ec-Entropion, Hyperplasia/Testicles and Patellar Luxatie, you will have all the health testing done for a fixed price and BI will automatically get a copy of the certificate for our database.

For all other countries:
Your examining vet must perform the following and make out certificates stating the findings (x-rays can be sent to BI for reading OFA and Norberg angle) : x-rays of hips and elbows, clinical examination of eyes and genitals.

After receiving health reports, the findings are applied to the health section of the BI appraisal sheet as follows:
Results are accessed on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 as the PERFECT/ EXCELLENT example and progressively less to 1 which is UNACCEPTABLE.

Reports on HIPS and ELBOWS will be handled on the same base as KUSA and other INTERNATIONAL CANINE ORGANIZATIONS , depending on the specific
country involved.

The point system will be as follows;

POINTS
HIP
STATUS
HIP
STATUS
ELBOW
STATUS
TESTICLES/HYPERPLASIAEYELIDS

50 – 0A1 + A20 – 055
41 – 1B1 + B21 – 144
32 – 2C1 + C22 – 233
23 – 3D1 + D23 – 322
14 – 4E1 + E14 – 411

The total value of the HEALTH REPORT counts out of 100 points, but forms only 25% of the TOTAL PRODUCTION INDEX (TPI).

SEE EXAMPLE BELOW !!!!!!

D). MEASUREMENTS

The following ten measurements are taken to form a data base where specific Boerboel’s BREEDING VALUES on specific characteristics can be monitored. This data is of big importance to use in the BREED IMPROVEMENT SCHEME (BIS).

  1. HEAD LENGTH
  2. HEAD CIRCUMFERENCE
  3. NECK CIRCUMFERENCE
  4. HEIGHT at the WITHERS
  5. CIRCUMFERENCE of the CHEST.
  6. DEPTH of the CHEST.
  7. WIDTH of the SHOULDER.
  8. LENGTH of the BODY.
  9. WIDTH of the CROUP.
  10. MASS.

E). REGISTERS

It is of utmost importance to widen the gene pool of the Boerboel as various detrimental conditions are either destroying the breed or looming in the background.
We as guardians of the breed should take charge and through clever decisions ensure that the breed faces the future with confidence and sound health conditions. To get maximum value and much needed increased participation from breeders and owners of Boerboels from around the world, we should make the accessibility into REGISTRIES a lot easier.

We therefore have three REGISTRIES;

Qualifications for the BI registries.

For you dog to be accepted in the Registration + Register your dog must reach the following minimums:

  • The dog must be micro chipped.
  • The dog must reach a minimum of 80% in his/her conformation score.
  • The dog must reach a minimum of 90% in the character test.
  • The dog must have a minimum score of 90% in the health section (Hips, Elbows, Eyes and genitalia).
  • This minimum result example above will give the dog a TPI of 85,00 %
  • Which is the minimum requirement for getting into the Registration + Register (but only in the combination that will fulfill the above mentioned minimums, as it is possible to have a TPI of 85% without fulfilling these!)

For you dog to be accepted in the Excellence Register your dog must reach the following minimums:

  • The dog must be micro chipped.
  • The dog must reach a minimum of 85% in his/her conformation score.
  • The dog must reach the minimum of 90% in the character test.
  • The dog must have a score of 100% in the health section (Hips, Elbows, Eyes and genitalia).
  • The dog must have a DNA profile

These minimum requirements will give your dog a TPI of 90,00 %.
Which is the minimum requirement for getting into the Excellence Register. (but only in the combination that will fulfill the above mentioned minimums, as it is possible to have a TPI of 90% without fulfilling these!)

All dogs that reach these above minimum requirements for breeding, at a BI appraisal, but do not meet the criteria of the Registration + or Excellence Register, will go into the Registration Register.

These requirements are effective as of 01-08-2013.
All previous registrations will not be changed !!!

As of 01-01-2014 these are the minimum requirements for breeding/litter registration with BI:

  • Your dog must be micro chipped.
  • Your dog must have a minimum score of 75% in conformation, to be bred from in BI
  • Your dog must have a minimum score of 75% in the character test, to be bred from in BI
  • Your dog born after 01-01-2012 must be health tested and BI appraised (As of 01-07-2014), to be bred from in BI.
  • Your dog must be 16 months before bred from.
  • The rules, regulations and/or laws in your country may be different. BI will follow these of course.
  • Your dog must have the minimum age of 12 months before the dog can be appraised.

In case of special circumstances one has to contact BI through office@boerboelinternational.eu

These results , both the % and the achievement results , together with the TPI value, will be printed on the specific Boerboel’s REGISTRATION CERTIFICATE.

EXAMPLE
:

A male dog with a conformation score of 85%, who has “B” hips, is elbow dysplasia free ,
has both testicles
fully descended into the scrotum and is entropion and ectropion free and have a
characterscore of 85,00%
Should he score 85 in his temperament test this is then divided by 4 to become
21.25 %
Two testicles                     : 5 x coefficient 5 = 25
“B” hips                             : 4 x coefficient 6 = 24
Elbow dysplasia free            : 5 x coefficient 5 = 25
Entropion and Ectropion free : 5 x coefficient 4 = 20

The text in this picture for the temperament test has been changed.

Giving a total health score of 94, this score of 94 is then divide by 4 = 23,50%

His conformation score of 85% is divide by 2 giving him 42.50%

So far his appraisal score without his temperament test is 23.25% + 42.50% = 65.75%

Should he score 85 in his temperament test this is then divided by 4 to become 21.25 % therefore his total score would be:

Conformation
 42,50 %

Health :
 23,50 %

Temperament :
 21,25 %
 ——–
BI TPI
score

:
87,25 %
TPI = Total Production Index.
